CVC bow out of the National Schools Squash Tournament with honour
The Battle of Waterloo may have been won on the playing fields of Eton, but our team met their Waterloo against Eton on the squash courts of Comberton. We played host to a strong Under-15 Eton Boys team, and ended up losing by four matches to one in Stage Two of the tournament, but it was pleasing to see that all our players performed well.
Although our 3, 4 and 5 strings (Charlie McRobie, Henry Prime and Sam Hicks) lost their matches 3-0 they all ran their opponents close at times, and were mainly undone by the accuracy of the Etonians’ drop shots. Todd Roberts at 2 looked to be well in control after taking the first two games 11-2, 11-3, but his opponent fought back and, after edging a long fourth game 14-12, sealed a 3-2 victory for Eton. Laurence Temple got off to great start, conceding just a single point in the opening game, and went on to record a fine 3-0 win: the first Comberton player to win a match against Eton in the two rubbers we’ve played against them over the years!
So as we depart from this year’s tournament it’s congratulations to all the squad (including reserves Matt Haynes and Owen Mellors-Bourne) for their achievements in getting us comfortably through Stage One and putting up such a plucky performance in Stage Two.
