Comberton nose ahead in Division III

We sent two Third teams to Abbotsley on January 8th to take on the host club and Fenland (Crown Lodge had been forced to withdraw from the division owing to a lack of players). Against the stronger opposition, Abbotsley, we fielded Sam Hicks at 1, Josh Morrow at 2 and Adam Peer at 3. Sam had the difficult task of playing the very talented young Harry Hennessy and, perhaps suffering from some post-Christmas lethargy, didn’t quite manage to get on terms with Harry, losing 3-0. Fortunately, though, our other two players were on good form, both recording 3-0 wins in matches which featured some very close games. We ended up with a 9-3 points win in the tie.

Our “B” team against Fenland comprised three newcomers to County League squash: Alex Morrow at 1, Dan Chaplin at 2 and Joe Hicks at 3. Alex was up against an experienced opponent in Nick Whyatt, losing 3-0, and Dan lost by the same margin, although he scored well in all three games. It was left to Joe Hicks to record our only win against Fenland with a decisive victory in straight games. So we lost 9-3 to Fenland, but with one fixture left in this division Comberton have edged into the lead with 30 points from the two fixtures played so far compared to Abbotsley’s 24 and Fenland’s 9. Still all to play for in the final fixture on February 26th!
