Mixed result for Comberton in the Premier Division

Once again there are only two teams competing in the Premier Division of the Cambs Junior League this season, and, as last year, we’re up against Hunts County.

In the first of the season’s two fixtures we travelled to Hemingford Grey to face what has become their regular trio of nationally-ranked players: Greg Goodwin, Tayla Mounter and Nadine El-Refee. We were a bit below our top strength, as Jeremy Harris was occupied with a sponsored cycle ride – though if he had known he was going to have to retire with a puncture after only three miles he might have opted for the squash fixture instead!

In the event, both our no. 3, Todd Roberts, and no. 2, Alan Leung, put up respectable performances against their female opponents, but in each case the girls had the edge, and both matches went 3-1 in favour of Hunts County. This left Laurence Temple, our no. 1, to redress the balance against his old foe Gregory. Laurence played very well throughout, and Gregory never looked like matching him on this occasion, Comberton’s 3-0 win a fair reflection of the play.

So we took 5 points from the tie, with Hunts County recording 9 points – a four-point lead which we could well make up in the second half in the New Year.
