Tom Blair retains his Club Under-16 title

Comberton held its Under-16 tournament on Sunday afternoon, June 19, and we had a good quality field of fifteen entrants (sadly reduced to twelve when Selina Leung and Charlie McRobie had to drop out and Laurence Temple was delayed in Sussex by winning the Plate Final at the Brighton Junior Open).

We ran the tournament as a round robin competition with the players roughly seeded and divided into three boxes. The winners of each box plus the highest-scoring runner-up progressed to the semi-final play-offs, while the remaining players who came second and third in their boxes took part in sliding door matches to determine the final ranking order.

Our four semi-finalists were Tom Blair, Alex Gooding, Jeremy Harris, and Jo Weavers. Tom beat Alex 2-0, while Jo defeated Jeremy 2-1 in a very closely-fought match. Tom then beat Jo 2-0 in the final to retain the title he won last year. Jeremy conceded the ¾ play-off against Alex.

Final rankings were:

1. – Tom Blair
2. – Joe Weavers
3. – Alex Gooding
4. – Jeremy Harris
5. – Todd Roberts
6. – Mark Dancy
7. – Henry Prime
8. – Nick White
9. – Sam Hicks
10. – Angus Harris

An honourable mention also to Josh Harland-Mears and Ellis Maloney, who took part in the box matches but were unable to stay for the play-offs.
