Cambs Junior League season gets underway

The season began for Comberton with two fixtures on November 7th: the Premier Division at home and Division Two at Hunts County Squash Club.

Our First Team had only one club to play at Comberton, as Cambridge Squash Club were unable to field a team (which meant that Comberton and Hunts County each had a 12-0 walkover against them).

Hunts County fielded a trio of players all ranked in the top 25 nationally, so we had our work cut out against them! Nick White at #3 found the power and accuracy of Tayla Mounter hard to cope with, but battled with great determination and was eventually rewarded with a game, though lost the match 3-1 in the end. David Snelling at #2 had a terrific tussle against Tayla’s friend Nadine El-Refee, losing by the narrowest of margins 11-8 in the fifth game. Meanwhile Jeremy Harris, our #1, was having an equally tight battle against his old foe Gregory Goodwin. This time it was Greg’s turn to win – 11-9 in the fifth game! So the overall points tally was 12 to Hunts County (including three bonus points) and 5 to Comberton – a respectable result considering the strength of the opposition.

Our Third Team also found themselves with only Hunts County to play, as Hunts Leisure Centre had recently dropped out and Cambridge SC once again pulled out. Jeremy Hughes at #3 and Josh Morrow at #2 were both making their debut for Comberton and they enjoyed mixed fortunes. Jeremy lost 3-0 despite amassing a decent tally of points, while Josh performed very well to win his match. Our #1, Sam Hicks, put up a good fight but eventually lost 3-0, giving Hunts County a 2-1 overall win.

CVC Under 15s ease through to Stage Two of the National Schools Squash Championships

Our school team travelled down to Chelmsford on November 16 for their away match against King Edward VI Grammar School, having already disposed comfortably of Brentwood School, the only other school in our Stage One group. As it turned out, KEGS were a very inexperienced squad who put up minimal resistance, enabling all our players, including our two reserves, to record emphatic 3-0 wins. Comberton are once again, therefore, through to Stage Two as Group E winners, and we wait to see who are runners-up in Group G, as they will be our opponents after Christmas, when we can expect much stiffer opposition!

Congratulations to all the team – Jeremy Harris, Alex Gooding, Laurence Temple, Todd Roberts and Charlie McRobie – as well as our reserves, Matthew Haynes and Finn Savage.
