Comberton Boys step up to Regional Competition
Our top junior boys were at the luxurious Bishops Stortford Club last weekend for the England Squash and Racketball Regional Closed Tournament. This is an elite competition to select the players for the Regional Squad - one step down from the National Squad so you can imagine just how tough the opposition is at this level.
In the U15 competition we had Sam Bradshaw, Tom Blair, and Will Collett. In the U17 we had Tom Symmons.
Tom S. had a bruising time as this was his first year in the U17 age grouping. He never played his best and was stuck in the bottom half of the final order.
Tom Blair had a bye in the first round and then proved it was well deserved by beating his first opponent convincingly. This positioned him in the top half of the draw which meant he had to face tough opposition including Ritchie Fallows who was the eventual winner overall. Despite this Tom convincingly won a further match to give him seventh position overall.
Will Collett also had a bye but unfortunately lost his first match and then had to face a gritty performance from our own Sam Bradshaw. Sam proved the sharper of the two and, having started in lowest position of all our player, pushed on through to finish tenth in the top of the bottom half despite very painful tendonitis in his right knee. Will was able to consolidate his position after that and finished fifteenth - solidly in the bottom half of the competition.
It was good to see so many Comberton players in a regional event. Well done to all of them.
