Mixed fortunes for new players in the Junior Fourth Team
Comberton Junior Fourth Team opened our campaign to retain the Cambs Junior League Division Three title at Fenland Squash Club on 9th November. All three of our players were new to the County Leagues, as were most of the other teams, so predicting winners was impossible!
In our tie versus Hunts County our 3rd-string player, Charlie McRobie, was up against the older and more experienced Georgina Goodwin. This turned into an epic struggle, with Georgina twice ahead in games, but Charlie refused to give up and emerged a 3-2 winner. Greg Funge at #2 played Callum Valler, whose strength proved decisive, though Greg’s points tally improved steadily as the match progressed even though he didn’t manage to take a game off his opponent. Adam Sandercock at #1 had a close tussle against Gareth Pullen, losing by a narrow margin in each of the three games.
We then played Fenland, and Charlie was soon involved in another titanic battle, this time losing 9-11 to Tom Gray in the fifth game. This had been an excellent afternoon’s performance from a player who’s still at primary school! Greg took the first game against Seb Walton but after that the effects of his morning football match began to tell, and he was unable to maintain his momentum, going down 1-3. Adam battled with great determination against Alex Cleland, and despite losing the first game eventually won 3-1, concluding with a nail-biting 14-12 victory in the fourth game.
This was a good performance from all our players, none of whom gave up on their matches and all of whom played with spirit and sportsmanship – well done!
