Promising start for Comberton Third Team
The first fixture of the Cambs Junior League season took place at Fenland Squash Club on 19th October. Our very successful team who had won Division Three last season were moving up a division, and they found the opposition a bit hotter this time round! Joe Dickens had stepped in as a last-minute replacement for injured Jeremy Harris, and his opening match was against an experienced St Ivo #3, Ollie Le Farge. Although Joe didn’t take a game, it was encouraging to see that he got more points in each successive game. Alex Gooding at #2 found himself up against the formidable Fraser Gant, and was never able to quite handle Fraser’s powerful drives, but, like Joe, increased his points tally in each game of the match. Sam Bradshaw at #1 played with his usual energy to win 3-0 at #1, outlasting Chris Osborne to take the final game 13-11.
We then faced Fenland’s First Team, with Joe going on against Karen Dickman in a marathon in which both players had spells of domination, Karen finally breaking through in the fifth game to take the match. Alex meanwhile was having an equally close match against Dominic Richardson – in the end Alex just lost it 11-8 in the fifth. So we’d already got four points when Sam went on against the accurate and hard-hitting Kate Hendry. At first a bit overwhelmed by Kate’s power, he recovered brilliantly from losing the first game to take the next three in a match of contrasting styles.
With three more fixtures yet to come in this division I feel that Comberton still have a realistic chance of taking the title, so the ten points we managed from our first fixture could yet prove vital come next Spring!
