Agricole Cup under-16 results

This Saturday 28th June we played the under-16 age group of the Agricole Cup mixed age doubles tournament. This is a tournament for adult:junior pairs.

The first round was a round-robin league which was the best of three matches for each pair against three other opponents. There were some exciting games and excellent squash. Winners of the A league were Tom B. and Derek Fuller who went on to the final against winners of the B league Will C. and Andrew D'Alessandro. Runners up were Sam Bradshaw and Mike Macnamee who played Tom and Martyn Symmons in the 3rd/4th place playoff. Special mention goes to Mike who was also paired with Beth Collett in the B. league and so was hardly off the court! It was a good job that he did not have to face himself in the playoff!

In a very exciting final Tom and Derek took the first game but Will and Andrew fought back to win the second. In the third there were some nailbiting rallies with a great range of shots played and all players covering the whole court. Finally it was Tom and Derek who managed to clinch the decider. The first winners of the U16 Agricole Cup.

In the 3rd/4th place decider three games were also needed but finally Tom and Martyn gained third place with Sam and Mike in fourth.
Thanks are due to everyone that turned out and played in such great spirit. And also their help with refereeing. It was good to spot those footfaults, Tom! Special thanks are due to Jeremy Cole whose company Agricole sponsors the event.

Well played everyone and see you all next year.

Agricole Cup U-16 doubles competition

Following on from our exciting Under-19 Agricole Cup mixed age doubles competition we now present The Agricole Cup Under-16 age range. This is a Mixed-Age Squash Doubles Tournament. A fun competition for Adult/Junior Pairs. Sponsored by Agricole Ltd.

We will play this next Saturday (28th June) from 12 until 16.30.

All pairing of Junior with Adults are eligible but the default pairing should be with family member if available. So: father:son / father:daughter / mother:daughter / mother:son / carer:child / grandparent:grandchild, etc. All junior girls are eligible for this competition regardless of age and Juniors without a squash-playing parent/ grandparent may approach an unrelated senior member to be their partner. We expect the pairings to span more than one generation - so for example Adult brother paired with under-16 brother would not really be in keeping with the spirit of the tournament - sorry;)

All players must be members of Comberton Village College Squash Club. And all players (including the Adults) must wear eye protection (we have plenty to lend out).

Send an email to Martyn letting him know your availability: martainn_oshiomains@btinternet.com

First Ever Comberton Squash Junior Committee meets

Last Saturday saw the first ever meeting of the Comberton Squash Junior Committee. This was held to get Juniors' opinions on the club and the way the junior coaching is run. These are then presented to the full adult committee for considering any actions to improve things for the juniors.

Present:
Anna C., Beth C., Johnny B., Tom B., Will C., Sam B., Sam P., Kevin S., Matt C., Nick H.
Chairman: Mike Macnamee (Child Protection Officer)
Secretary: Martyn Symmons (Junior Coach)

The first meeting of the Comberton Village College Squash Club Junior Committee, held on court 3 on Saturday 14th June 2008.

The committee considered ways in which we could improve the club for juniors.

Computer-controlled Key Fobs - to get better access control particularly for some disruptive ex-junior members who still have keys.

• An official junior membership card to prove full status for after-school access.

• Access to targets and better racquets for solo training.

Sponsorship from the club to help with equipment and travel for teams.

• The juniors are generally happy with the current courts/changing rooms. But in the future they would like to see the courts improved to give a glass-backed court with viewing area similar to facilities in other clubs.

Anna C. will present some of these ideas to the Club Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 18th June. They will also be considered at the Club Committee meeting on the 17th July. Thanks to all the juniors who attended and gave their input.
